Most of us are always looking for ways to cut back on cooling costs. Our electric fans and air conditioners get a good workout during the summer months, and that can really hike our energy bills.
We shouldn’t have to spend the height of the summer in discomfort, all to save an inflated energy bill. But there are ways to stay cool and keep the electric bill in check.
How to Cut Back on Cooling Costs Without Sacrificing Comfort
If everyone tries just a little bit and makes a few adjustments, you can still keep the house cool without exaggerated energy bills.
Get a Smart Thermostat
If you don’t have a programmable thermostat it’s likely time you had an upgrade. You can set the temperature and turn your air conditioning on or off from your mobile device.
That way, you can turn it on or program it to come on just before you arrive home. It saves all that energy from running it all day, or the need to crank it up to high when you enter your stifling home.
Use Ceiling Fans
Your ceiling fans can make a big difference to the temperature in the room. They are much cheaper to run and you can have them in all the rooms. Set at the highest speed, the fan will create a cool breeze.
They help with humidity and can allow you to run the air conditioner at a lower temperature. Ceiling fans are pleasant year-round, as they help circulate the air, remove odors, and work to warm or cool the space.
Avoid Running Appliances at Peak Hours
Your larger appliances give off heat already. Try to avoid using your over, the washer and dryer, and dishwasher during off-peak hours. If possible, cook outside on the BBQ or prepare cold dishes.
You can always cook up a few meals ahead of time. You can also get smart appliances that can be set to turn on and off when you are not at home. This will help cut back on cooling costs as you are not going to be there.
Cut Back on Cooling Cost with Inspections and Maintenance
Keep your filters cleaned or replaced regularly during the hot months. A regular inspection will let you know if there are any leaks, holes, or other problems that will prevent your HVAC system from operating correctly.
If you need a service call in the height of summer, you may have to wait and you will likely pay a lot more, as well. A well-maintained air conditioner is the best way to cut back on cooling costs.
Ideally, you should have your entire system inspected and cleaned twice a year. That way, you are ready for the extremes of winter and summer. Give us a call here at Beebe Heating and Air Conditioning if you need advice, some repairs, or a new air conditioner.
