We ask a lot of our heater and air conditioner. We want them to perform to the best of their ability. But their ability to perform depends on us. When they don’t work well, that means they need a bit of help from an HVAC contractor.
Our HVAC systems have a few ways of letting us know they are in need of some maintenance or repair. It’s up to us to take note of these signs so they don’t break down.
It’s Time To Call Your HVAC Contractor
Some signs may be small whispers while others may be screams.
Increased Energy Bill
If your energy bill has a sharp increase in heating or air conditioning, that is a pretty clear sign something might be wrong. It might be clogged or have a leak. But if your bill increases over regular use, call your contractor.
Low or No Air Flow
If you have the unit on high or if you can hear your heater or air conditioner turn on, but you cannot feel anything coming from the vents, you may have a blockage.
You can check your filters to see if they are clear or clogged with dust. If that doesn’t help, check the vents. If you don’t find anything, call your HVAC specialist.
No Change in Temperature
You might have airflow and everything seems to be working but there is no hot or cold air. This could be the thermostat or a wiring problem. It’s not a problem you should try to fix. Call the guy.
Likewise, if it is hard to control the temperature, it gets way too hot, way too cold, or you simply can’t change or control the temperature, you need to get someone in to look it over.
Bad Smells
Bad smells or odors, or even good smells, for that matter, should not be present. If it the first time you turned it on, it’s common to get a musty odor. But if it smells like something is burning, something rotting or anything other scent that shouldn’t be there, you need to call your expert to check it out.
Strange Noises
Banging, thumping, grinding, popping, or squeaking is considered strange noises. A hum is common but if that hum has changed, gotten louder, or even stopped, it’s time to be concerned.
It could be any number of things, all of which you should not investigate on your own. You don’t want to cause more damage or get injured. It could be a badger.
Frequent Repairs
If your unit breaks down a lot or requires a lot of attention, you should call an HVAC contractor. Or, possibly a new one. Getting repairs for something that never seems to get fixed might mean it is something else.
Constantly breaking down units might mean it’s time to get a new one. If it is at least 15 years old, you may actually save money getting a new system rather than t keep paying to repair an old one.
